Itinerary

Just 30 minutes' drive from central Kathmandu, Sundarijal is the gateway to Shivapuri National Park and the starting point for one of the finest short treks accessible from the capital. The trail climbs through the national park's dense oak and rhododendron forest — a surprising wilderness so close to a metropolis of five million people — to Chisapani ('cold water') on the ridge above. From Chisapani's viewpoint, the Himalaya appears in a dramatic 270-degree arc: Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal, Dorje Lakpa and, on exceptionally clear days, Everest's summit. The sunset view from this ridge is one of the finest in the Kathmandu Valley. Overnight in a simple but comfortable teahouse. Walking time: 5–6 hours. Meals: All included.

The trail follows the Shivapuri ridge eastward through oak and maple forest with continuous Himalayan views to the north. In spring the rhododendrons bloom spectacularly; in autumn the forest turns gold and red. The route is quiet and authentic — local farmers, grazing cattle and the smell of cooking fires from small settlements along the way. Nagarkot, reached in the late afternoon, is one of Nepal's most famous viewpoints — a ridge-top village east of Kathmandu with what many consider the widest panoramic view of the Himalaya accessible by road. Walking time: 5–6 hours. Meals: All included.

Rise early for the Nagarkot sunrise — the Himalayan chain from Annapurna in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east all simultaneously visible in the clear morning air. After breakfast, hike or take a short vehicle transfer down to Bhaktapur — Nepal's best-preserved medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend 2–3 hours exploring the extraordinary 55-Window Palace, Nyatapola Temple (the tallest pagoda in Nepal) and the potter's quarter, before returning to Kathmandu by early afternoon. Walking time: 2–3 hours (optional). Meals: Breakfast.

Essential Tips

The best seasons are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November). Spring brings rhododendron blooms and stable weather; Autumn offers crystal-clear post-monsoon visibility. Nepal trips in these windows deliver optimal mountain views.

This trip is rated Easy. Suitable for beginners with basic fitness — walking 3-4 times per week for 4-6 weeks is adequate. No technical experience needed.

Most nationalities get Nepal visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport for USD 30 (30 days). Indian nationals do not require a visa.

Required permits and TIMS card arranged by Mantra Adventure. No extra hassle for you.

Included: Airport transfers; domestic flights/transport per itinerary; all trek accommodation; all meals during trek; English-speaking guide; porters (1 per 2 trekkers); all trekking permits; Mantra Adventure duffel bag. Not included: International flights; Nepal visa; personal travel insurance (mandatory); personal gear; tips.

For Chisapani Nagarkot Hiking (Easy): Regular walking or swimming 3×/week for 6 weeks is sufficient. You should be comfortable walking 5-6 hours on uneven terrain.

Maximum altitude is 2,175m / Nagarkot. At this elevation, altitude sickness is uncommon for healthy trekkers who follow our paced itinerary. Walk slowly, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol initially.
