Itinerary

Arrive at Kathmandu and transfer to Thamel hotel. Evening orientation briefing with your Mantra Adventure guide. The Langtang and Gosainkunda trek combines the remote Himalayan beauty of the Langtang Valley with a crossing of the sacred Laurebina La pass to the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site of the Gosainkunda Lakes. Welcome dinner included. Meals: Dinner.

A 5–6 hour drive through the Trishuli River gorge and winding mountain roads to Syabrubesi — the gateway village for Langtang. The drive itself is an adventure: narrow roads carved into cliff faces, terraced hillsides, and occasional views of the Langtang peaks ahead. Overnight in a teahouse at Syabrubesi. Meals: All included.

Enter Langtang National Park and trek north along the Langtang Khola River through sub-tropical forest. The trail climbs steadily through oak, chestnut and bamboo, with the river roaring far below in a deep gorge. Watch for red pandas in the bamboo thickets — Langtang is one of Nepal's best red panda habitats. Walking time: 5–6 hours. Meals: All included.

The valley opens dramatically as you emerge from the forest into wide alpine meadows grazed by yak herds. Langtang Village — rebuilt after being devastated by the 2015 earthquake — is a moving testament to Tamang community resilience. A memorial near the village entrance honours the 350 lives lost when an avalanche buried the settlement in seconds. The rebuilt village is warm and welcoming. Walking time: 5–6 hours. Meals: All included.

The final ascent to Kyanjin Gompa across the wide glacial floor of the upper Langtang Valley. The ancient monastery (7th century AD) sits on a flat plateau surrounded by some of the finest Himalayan scenery accessible without technical climbing. The Kyanjin Cheese Factory — established with Swiss assistance in the 1950s — produces exceptional yak cheese. Walking time: 3–4 hours. Meals: All included.

A day to breathe, acclimatise and explore. Morning hike up Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) for sweeping panoramas of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966m) and the entire Langtang glacial system. Visit the cheese factory, attend morning puja at the gompa, and watch the yak herders bring their animals home at dusk. Meals: All included.

The finest viewpoint in the Langtang region. The 4–5 hour return ascent of Tserko Ri gains over 1,100 metres on a steep but well-marked trail. From the summit at 4,984 metres, the panorama includes Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gangchenpo and the entire length of the valley you've walked over the past three days. One of the great viewpoints in Nepal. Meals: All included.

Begin the descent southward, retracing the route through Langtang Village and back through the forest to Lama Hotel. The altitude drop is significant and welcome — evening brings the sounds of the forest, birdsong, and the rushing Langtang Khola. Walking time: 6–7 hours. Meals: All included.

Leave the main valley trail and ascend to Thulo Syabru — a ridge village with a panoramic position and one of the best views of Langtang Lirung from below. The climb through forest offers excellent birding. Thulo Syabru is the last proper village before the high pass route to Gosainkunda. Walking time: 4–5 hours. Meals: All included.

Climb through dense forest on a less-travelled trail towards the high country of the Gosainkunda. Sing Gompa (also called Chandan Bari) is a small monastery-village famous for its yak cheese. The forest here is pristine and the trail quiet. Walking time: 4–5 hours. Meals: All included.

A dramatic ascent above the tree line to Gosainkunda — one of Nepal's most sacred lakes. The dark waters reflect the surrounding peaks and the sky, and the stone shrines and prayer flags that ring the lake give it an atmosphere of profound spiritual power. Hindus believe Shiva rested here after drinking cosmic poison; Buddhists consider it the abode of Brahma. During the Janai Purnima festival in August, thousands of pilgrims visit. Walking time: 4–5 hours. Meals: All included.

Cross the Laurebina La pass (4,610m) — a dramatic high crossing between the Langtang and Helambu regions. The path climbs steeply from the lake, passing several smaller sacred tarns, before reaching the wind-scoured pass where an enormous stupa marks the boundary. The long descent to Ghopte drops through alpine meadows and into the upper birch and rhododendron forest of the Helambu region. Walking time: 6–7 hours. Meals: All included.

Descend through the Helambu valley — terraced fields, Sherpa villages and apple orchards — to the road at Melamchi Pul Bazaar where a vehicle awaits for the 3–4 hour drive back to Kathmandu. Walking time: 4–5 hours. Meals: All included.

Airport transfer for your international departure. The Langtang Valley, its rebuilt communities, the sacred Gosainkunda Lakes and the high crossing of Laurebina La have given you a Nepal experience that relatively few visitors ever find. Meals: Breakfast.

Essential Tips

The best seasons are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November). Spring brings rhododendron blooms and stable weather; Autumn offers crystal-clear post-monsoon visibility. Nepal trips in these windows deliver optimal mountain views.

This trip is rated Moderate. Suitable for beginners with basic fitness — walking 3-4 times per week for 4-6 weeks is adequate. No technical experience needed.

Most nationalities get Nepal visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport for USD 30 (30 days). Indian nationals do not require a visa.

Required permits and TIMS card arranged by Mantra Adventure. No extra hassle for you.

Included: Airport transfers; domestic flights/transport per itinerary; all trek accommodation; all meals during trek; English-speaking guide; porters (1 per 2 trekkers); all trekking permits; Mantra Adventure duffel bag. Not included: International flights; Nepal visa; personal travel insurance (mandatory); personal gear; tips.

For Langtang Valley with Gosainkunda Lake Trek (Moderate): Regular walking or swimming 3×/week for 6 weeks is sufficient. You should be comfortable walking 5-6 hours on uneven terrain.

Maximum altitude is 4,380m / Gosainkunda. Altitude sickness is a real risk above 3,500m. Our itinerary includes acclimatisation days and our guides carry supplemental oxygen. Diamox can be taken as prophylaxis — consult your doctor. Emergency evacuation insurance is mandatory.
